What’s going on with Voluntary Action Kirklees (VAK)?
VAK is going through some upheaval at the moment. Long planned changes in the way Kirklees Council funds local independent support for community and voluntary organisations have been shelved and the council funding that has previously been available to VAK is no longer available. This has left VAK in an uncertain situation.
VAK is an independent organisation with a range of funders and partners; however our largest funder has always been Kirklees Council.
Huddersfield Methodist Mission has made us a very generous offer of rent free space until Xmas so that we can continue to offer support for volunteering through the Volunteer Centre.
We are in discussions with the council to explore if we can work together in the future to ensure that there is strategic independent support for voluntary and community organisations in Kirklees. However, we will have to reduce the services that we are able to offer and sadly will have to reduce staff numbers through redundancies.
We are hopeful that times of change can also be times of opportunity. In the next few weeks VAK will be reviewing how we work and what we do. We want to develop strong, positive and creative ways to support voluntary and community organisations through the next few difficult years and beyond.
In the short term we will continue to provide the usual VAK services:
- Training
- Organisational development and funding advice
- The Future Jobs Fund
- Volunteering
- Payroll services for VCS organisations
We’d like to thank everyone who has voiced their concern and support for our organisation in the last few weeks. We remain committed to supporting voluntary and community action in Kirklees.
