VAK Services Slashed! (02/07/10)
Kirklees Council has cancelled the tendering process for infrastructure support to voluntary & community organisations across Kirklees. VAK and a consortium of organisations including fit4funding, WYCAS, Fresh Horizons, The Pay & Employment Rights Service, Artimedia & Electroville, had been waiting to hear if their bid for funding, that would have guaranteed infrastructure support to the sector for the next 3 years, had been successful. Instead we have been informed that the money is now no longer available. This decision will leave voluntary & community sector support in Kirklees in tatters and throws the spotlight on the Council’s previous commitments to supporting the voluntary & community sector.
The council has indicated that it will continue to provide support using its own staff.
Director of VAK, Val Johnson concludes, “We know that times are hard and cuts are inevitable, but front line community organisations need independent support. Kirklees is on its way to becoming one of the few councils in the country that does not provide independent services or an independent Volunteer Centre to help maintain vital local community action.”
Organisations & groups who have received help & support from VAK and the other organisations involved in the consortium are being asked to offer support by contacting council leader Cllr. Khan to express their views on the decision.
